EnvironmentHeinz Australia is committed to protecting the environment, and we recognize the relationship of food processing operations to our global and local environments.
Complying with the law is our minimum standard. We also set and monitor targets for environmental management in our operations, through Environmental Management Systems, that are audited annually. These targets help us decrease the impact of our production operations by increasingly efficient use of energy, raw materials, water and packaging.
We make sure all our suppliers and contractors also work towards these goals.
By addressing these impacts we can improve our environmental performance and also manufacturing efficiencies.
Some of the ways we are addressing environmental issues nationwide include:
- We are a signatory to the National Packaging Covenant in Australia, established in August 1999 to reduce the environmental impact of product packaging. Over 500 companies across the packaging supply chain are working together to achieve positive change. Heinz has set up its own action plan under this covenant, which will be audited and approved by Environment Australia. To view the Covenant click here
- In 2002, we participated in a supply chain project funded by Environment Australia and co-ordinated by Infotech Research. The project involved looking at all wastes generated at each stage from primary-producer to consumer for our famous Big Red Tomato Sauce and Ketchups.
Our sites address Heinz's broad objectives and also specific local issues:
- Wagga - Greenhouse gas reductions (won Silver Award from state government’s Sustainable Energy Development Authority); wastewater recycling project; membership of local Innovative Resource Management group.
- Girgarre – Accreditation under Victorian Environment Protection Authority's EcoRecycle "Waste-Wise" program; investigations into extracting lycopene from waste tomato products, reducing salt in waste water, and other uses for waste water; foundation membership of Goulburn Valley Food Processors Environmental Group.
- Echuca – Waste water recycling project and other initiatives for handling waste water. Establishment of a solid-waste handling facility at the site.
Our environmental policy and principles are common across all the worldwide affiliates of HJ Heinz. The global environmental report can be seen at http://www.heinz.com/jsp/2000_environmental_report.pdf
