Community

Heinz employees take great pride in the activities we do to support our communities at both the local level through our Heinz Help@Hand program, our volunteering efforts, and from a more national approach through charity sponsorships, emergency aid support, product donations, scholarships and environmental activities.

Heinz Help@Hand

Heinz Help@Hand is our philanthropic program, which gives our people opportunities to work together for the benefit of their community.

Volunteer@Heinz

As part of the Volunteer@Heinz program, Heinz employees are entitled to two days paid volunteer leave per calendar year to volunteer with a registered charity in their local communities.

Charity Sponsorships

Heinz currently supports the following charities - Blueearth, Starlight Children’s Foundation Australia and Foodbank Australia.

Product Donations & Emergency Aid

Heinz Australia supports a wide range of charities that care for and support children, the disadvantaged and relief efforts across the country.

Each year we receive hundreds of requests for our great products but unfortunately we are unable to help everybody. Heinz supports Foodbank Australia, a not-for-profit whose primary role is to facilitate and distribute donations of food and grocery products to welfare agencies across Australia.

Written requests for product donations should be sent to our Consumer Services Department, Locked Bag 19057, Southbank, VIC 3006 or emailed to Consumer Support

Scholarships

Heinz currently sponsors a number of scholarship programs in child health, food technology and business development areas.

Infant

Through the Heinz Infant Feeding Advisory Service (HIFAS) team, Heinz sponsors the "Heinz Australia Travel Grant in Paediatrics or Child Health" for a final year graduate or postgraduate student of Flinders University.

Technical Scholarship

Heinz supports the RMIT Food Technology Scholarship program.

SIFE (Students In Free Enterprise)

Heinz is one of the major sponsors of the Students In Free Enterprise (SIFE) student development program.

The aim of the programme is to foster Free Enterprise Principles with tertiary students so that they are better educated and can make a more meaningful contribution toward a better world as entrepreneurs and business leaders.

The program challenges students to address real world business and economic issues in their communities.

Heinz has been a major sponsor of this student development program for eight years.

Environment

Heinz Australia is committed to protecting the environment. We recognize the relationship of food processing operations to our global and local environments.

Complying with the law is our minimum standard. We also set and monitor targets for environmental management in our operations, through our Environmental Management Systems, that are audited annually. These targets help us decrease the impact of our production operations by increasingly efficient use of energy, raw materials, water and packaging.
We make sure all our suppliers and contractors also work towards these goals.
By addressing these impacts we can improve our environmental performance and also manufacturing efficiencies.

Heinz is acting to address environmental issues nationwide in the following ways:

  • As a signatory to the National Packaging Covenant in Australia, we have set up our own action plan, under this covenant, which will be audited and approved by the national Packaging Covenant Council (http://www.deh.gov.au/settlements/waste/covenant/)
  • Each of our manufacturing sites have plans to address both the Heinz broad objectives and also specific local issues:
    • Wagga - Greenhouse gas reductions (won Silver Award from the State Government’s Sustainable Energy Development Authority); wastewater recycling project; membership of local Innovative Resource Management group.
    • Girgarre – Accreditation under Victorian Environment Protection Authority's EcoRecycle "Waste-Wise" program, reducing salt in waste water, and other uses for waste water; foundation membership of Goulburn Valley Food Processors Environmental Group, diversion of food waste to stock feeds, water use minimisation, energy reduction.
    • Echuca – Water use minimisation, waste water recycling project and other initiatives for handling waste water. Establishment of a solid-waste handling facility at the site. Diversion of food waste to stock feeds, energy reduction, waste minimisation, finalist in Victoria Save Water Awards 2003 & 2004,
    • Recognised as an Environmental Achiever at the North Central Natural Resource Management Recognition Event in 2004
    • Winner of Manufacturers' Monthly Environmental Solution of the Year 2006 for Water, Energy and Waste Reduction Initiatives

Our environmental policy and principles are common across all affiliates of HJ Heinz internationally. Our global environmental report can be within our Corporate Social responsibility report.
